This jezebel post got me thinking about generational gap(s) of the past 40 yrs:
According to France 24, 19 people died after a stampede broke out at Germany’s “Love Parade” music festival. Said one survivor: “I was lucky. I found a hole to escape through but two women were killed right next to me.”
It’s easy to imagine something like this at a festival heavy on mosh pit-inducing bands, but at The Love Parade?
I can almost hear the collective cry of burned-out hippies who attended (the original) Woodstock:
This sorta thing never happened back then, man! Once Woodstock tickets were gone, they let the rest of us in for free! What has the world come to?? It used to be about the music and not the money, man!
Yeah, there it is: nostalgia for the god ol’ days of relative innocence. As my bf says Howard Stern always says, I always knew we’d be screwed when the baby-boomers came into power. And Howard Stern is one of them, even!
So, to all of the bleeding ponytails out there– and anyone else who is nostalgic for the Vietnam era and/or Summer of Love, I say:
Thanks for Bush II and Obama, each of whom (perhaps in the spirit of Woodstock?) like to give away record-breaking amounts of free stuff, like Medicare’s drug benefit (with no lowering of prescription drug pricing of course) or, in Obie’s case, the entire healthcare system and… hell, the entire country (to anyone willing to hop a border fence).
Why can’t we learn from the mistakes of others (like Greece? Or other European Socialist countries??) Why can’t we learn from our own mistakes 100 years ago? (When brokers forged stock orders, bc they knew they’d get away with it… and alotta cash… til the market crashed.) Substitute “mortgage apps” for “stock orders” and suddenly we’re in current times!
It doesn’t take a PhD in Macroeconomics to note that Socialism and double digit unemployment go hand-in-hand! Or that lack of regulation inevitably leads to corruption on Wall St. (did any of you baby-boomers take a history class?)
And re: how peaceful you sworn hippies are, let me just point out a little example of cause-and-effect: double-digit unemployment is a catalyst for the jihadist movement worldwide (which is growing in America, right along with unemployment.)
Good Intentions are wonderful, but results are what matter.
